When I left the Supreme Court, I didn't know if I had won or lost the case. I went back to Austin and waited for the decision. On January 22, 1973 I learned that the Supreme Court had agreed with my position by a vote of 7-2. Here is the telegram I received that day. As you can see, it was sent "collect."

The day I argued Roe, the members of the press probably thought I was so young that I was unlikely to win. The only photo I have of that day was one taken by the staff of my Texas Congressman George Mahon. This photo is of Ron Weddington (my husband), me, Mahon, and my proud mother (December 13, 1971).
